Overview
The IT Service Desk team can unlock and move office computers or other computer-related equipment such as local printers and monitors.
Furniture moves, including items such as computer desks, are handled by Facilities through the Move Request Form.
Due to certain busy periods of the year, there are blackout periods where the IT Service Desk team are unable to perform IT equipment moves. The blackout periods are as follows:
- First 2 weeks of a semester
- Mondays, or Tuesdays if Monday was a stat holiday
Solution
Request to move furniture and computer
If you are moving to a new office and need your furniture and computer moved, you will find instructions and Facilities' move request form here.
Do not send a ticket to the IT Service Desk--you will be redirected to use the Move Request Form.
Request to move computer only
NOTE - If there are existing accessories in the new office and they are newer than the ones requested to be moved, those accessories do not need to be moved. The equipment in the new office should be used by the employee and the equipment in the old office can be used by whomever takes over the old office, or can be removed and picked up by IT if no one will be taking over the old office.
NOTE - IT will only move equipment procured from Langara IT. We will not move any personal items or devices.
CAUTION - Submit your request as early as possible (2 weeks is a good minimum) to maximise the chance of IT being able to do the move on your preferred date. Due to the high demand of the Service Desk team, we may not be able to accommodate your request if insufficient time is given to us to plan the move.
If you are only moving your computer, follow the process below:
Submit a ticket to the IT Service Desk using the Ask IT form with the details of the move:
- The computer/accessories being moved, including asset name (this is usually on the top of the computer case and includes the department code and a five-digit number)
- The phone local/extension to be moved
- Any non-standard accessories to be moved. If you are using a standard keyboard and mouse, and there is a set already in the new office, they will not be moved.
- The rooms the computer is being moved from and moved to
- Date and time of move
IT will evaluate the request and reply back to the ticket to arrange the move.
The IT Service Desk will ensure that you will have the same environment in your new office. For example, if you have two monitors now and the new office only has one, a second monitor will be added.
You will never be downgraded to inferior equipment.
TIPs - Please note the following restrictions for moves. Maximise the chance of us being able to carry out the move on your needed date by keeping the following restrictions in mind
- Due to limited resourcing, IT cannot do moves on Mondays, or Tuesdays if Monday was a stat holiday
- Due to limited resourcing, IT cannot do moves during first 2 weeks of a term
- No new hardware requests are part of a move
- Submit a ticket for each hardware request either following the move or ahead of the move and plan the move for after the new hardware has been deployed. IT cannot synchronise new hardware requests with moves. We may not have the hardware requested and have not control over delivery times for new purchases.
- Eg. If you are using a desktop computer and are moving to an office with no computer in it, this is not the time to ask for a new laptop. We will move the desktop computer. You will need to submit a separate ticket to request a Laptop and that will be handled separately from the move.
- Label everything! (If it's not labelled we will assume you do not want it moved)
- Who
- Where it is going
- Room
- Location/desk in room if more than 1 occupant
- We do not move personal electronic devices
- We do not move unsanctioned power supplies (we will ensure that the Langara equipment that is moved is safely powered)
