Resolving Passkey login issues on Windows lab computers

Overview

Due to a vendor issue, students with Passkey(s) setup as a multi-factor authentication (MFA) method having been facing difficulties when logging into the Windows lab computers. We are working with the vendor on a solution as well as other workarounds.

NOTE - Due to these vendor issues,  Passkeys as an MFA method will be disabled for students on Tuesday, October 6th at 10am. Students will be prompted to use one of their pre-existing MFA options instead. No action is required.

After entering login credentials to sign into a Windows lab computer, users with a passkey may see a message saying "Face, fingerprint, PIN or security key" and the process will appear to be stuck on loading:

Solution

Remove Passkey(s) from your Microsoft 365 account

Follow these steps to remove Passkey(s) as an Multi-Factor Authentication (MFA) method from your account:

  1. Login into your Microsoft 365 account's Security info page
  2. You will be prompted for MFA. Complete your MFA challenge to continue
  3. Within your list of sign-in methods, look for all entries called Passkey and click on Delete to remove themUploaded image
  4. You should now be prompted for a different MFA method the next time you try to log into a Windows lab computer

TIP - You will need to completely cancel and back out of your previous login attempt to the Windows lab computer before trying to login again without the passkey(s).

Workaround - If you do not wish to delete your Passkey(s) at this time

If you are facing a prompt for "Face, fingerprint, PIN or security key" after signing into a Windows lab computer and are unable to delete your passkey(s), please follow these steps:

  1. Scroll down and click on Privacy and Cookies:Uploaded image

  3. Click Sign in Another Way:Uploaded image
  4. Click Approve a request on my Microsoft Authenticator app (or any other pre-configured method) and complete the authentication process as usual:Uploaded image
