Connect to Wi-Fi on Mac OS

Summary

How to connect an Apple Macbook to the eduroam network

Body

Overview

Students and employees can connect Apple laptops to the eduroam Wi-Fi network when on campus.

NOTE -  Students and employees now need to authenticate with Microsoft Authenticator app when signing in to register their device with eduroam. Devices will work for 2 years before having to be re-registered.

CAUTION: eduroam will not work on macOS 10.7 (Lion) or lower. Upgrade to a newer version of macOS to connect to eduroam.

Solution

CAUTION: Your Computer User ID must be activated before you can connect to Wi-Fi.  If you have not activated your account, please follow the instructions in Activate your Computer User ID and Email (students) article.

To connect to Wi-Fi on your Mac computer, follow these steps.

  1. Click the Wi-Fi icon in the menu bar
  2. Choose Langara
    • NOTE -  Connection to the Langara wireless network will only last for an hour before it disconnects. Follow the steps below to connect to eduroam to connect to the Internet for a longer-term when you are on campus.
  3. In the pop-up, enter your Langara email (example: jsmith00@mylangara.ca) and password
  4. Click the Login button

  16. You will be promoted to authenticate using Microsoft Authenticator application on your mobile device.
  17. After successful authentication, you will be redirected back to SecureW2 JoinNow window
  18. Enter password for your computer to allow the change and click OK
    • Make sure you are entering your computer password and not Langara email password.
  19. Click Next to download eduroam profiles
    • NOTE -  You will need to complete these steps three times—once each for eduroam, eduroam5GHz, and eduroam6GHz (the 6GHz profile will only appear if your computer supports it).
  20. Click on the Profile Installation pop-up at the top right corner
    • If you do not see a pop-up, you can find eduroam profile in System Preferences > Profiles
  21. In Profiles, select Langara College eduroam (or Langara College eduroam 5GHz / 6GHzand click Install

  23. Enter your computer password to allow profile installation and click OK
  24. Repeat these steps until all required eduroam profiles (eduroam, eduroam 5GHz, and eduroam 6GHz if supported) are installed.
    • If your computer does not automatically connect to eduroam, click on the WiFi icon in the upper right and select eduroam, eduroam5GHz or eduroam6GHz

eduroam, eduroam5GHz, and eduroam6GHz (if your device is capable) will now be properly configured on your device. Your device will connect to the eduroam network automatically whenever you are in range of the wireless network when on campus.
