Overview
Microsoft is officially ending its support for Windows 10 on October 14, 2025. In order to keep our devices secure and up to date, Windows 11 is being rolled out to all computers still on Windows 10. The roll-out will be by department, one at a time, until all of our devices are on Windows 11.
Solution
Before your Windows 10 computer can be upgraded to Windows 11, you have to check if the upgrade is available on your computer by checking its compliance status.
How to check if your Windows 10 computer is ready to be upgraded to Windows 11 - Device Compliance
- Double click on the Software Center shortcut on your desktop to open Software Center
- Click on Operating Systems from the menu on the left
- If you see the update named Windows 11 In-Place listed, you can proceed with upgrading to Windows 11
- If there are no updates listed, your computer may not be compliant yet
- To check if your device is compliant, click on Device compliance from the menu on the left. You should see your device's Compliance status as Compliant and the Last checked time showing a recent time stamp
- If your device's Compliance status is not compliant and the Last checked time is not recent, click on the Check Compliance button. The Compliance status should update to Compliant and the Last checked time should update to the current time
- If your device still is not compliant, click on Options from the menu on the left, then Computer maintenance, and click on the Sync Policy button and wait 1 minute. Go back to Device compliance and click on the Check compliance again
- If your computer is still showing as not compliant, restart your computer and repeat steps 3.1 and 3.2
- If your computer is still showing as not compliant, a tech will need to check your computer. Please visit the IT Service Desk in the Library, chat with a tech on Remote Support, or open a General Software Support ticket
- Once your computer is compliant, you should see the Windows 11 In-Place update available and can proceed with the upgrade
If you see the Windows 11 In-Place update available in Software Center, your computer is ready to be upgraded to Windows 11.

CAUTION - Before performing the Windows 11 upgrade, make sure to backup your data to your H: drive or OneDrive. If the upgrade to Windows 11 fails and a tech is unable to resolve the issue, the computer will need to be re-imaged to Windows 11 which will wipe your data.
CAUTION - To allow the Windows 11 upgrade to complete successfully, make sure your laptop is connected to power and to the Internet. While the upgrade is in progress, you will be unable to use your laptop.
TIP - The Windows 11 upgrade can take anywhere from 2 to 2.5 hours to complete. The computer will reboot itself several times until it has completed.
TIP - Once Windows 11 has completed upgrading, you can use your computer, however it will want to install several Windows updates which will require your computer to shut down or restart. Allow the updates to install and when you are finished using your computer, choose Update and Shut Down when shutting down your computer.
